Citrus Ginger Tea

Citrus Ginger Tea

Citrus ginger tea is a delightful blend of spicy ginger, zesty citrus juice, and honey that will warm you from the inside out. This tea will awaken your senses, strengthen your immune and digestive systems and give you a natural energy boost.

The best ginger tea in the world (in my opinion) is from Moosewood Restaurant in Ithaca, NY. Its potently strong ginger flavor warms you from the inside out. It’s deliciously flavored with orange and lemon juice and the perfect amount of honey to temper the spiciness of the ginger. As a grad student living in downtown Ithaca, I would stop in to Moosewood all winter long to grab a ginger tea to-go on my walk home from campus. Once I moved outside of walking distance to Moosewood and lost my easy access to their tea, I set out to recreate their ginger tea at home.

How to Make Citrus Ginger Tea

Luckily, homemade citrus ginger tea is super easy, but does require time to simmer the ginger to make a strong brew. I like to simmer ginger for 15 minutes for a STRONG ginger flavor, but if you’d prefer a milder version, simply simmer for less time. I’ve also started adding fresh turmeric root along with the ginger to give the tea an extra anti-inflammatory boost.

Once your tea is the strength you like, strain out the ginger pieces, add the juice from half a lemon and half an orange, and stir in some honey.

  • Combine 16 oz water and 1 tbsp chopped ginger root (and 1 tsp chopped turmeric root if using) in a small pot.
  • Simmer for 15 minutes (or less for a milder tea)
  • Strain tea through a fine-mesh strainer and into a large mug
  • Add juice from half a lemon and half of an orange
  • Stir in honey to taste

When I’m feeling extra lazy, I make a thermos version- Pour boiling water into a well-insulated thermos along with the chopped ginger. Cover and let steep for 1 hour. Strain tea through a fine-mesh strainer and into a large mug. Reheat if needed in microwave. Stir in orange and lemon juice and honey.

Ingredient Notes

Ginger. No need to peel the ginger if using organic ginger. I like to save the small nubs of ginger that are annoyingly small to peel and use in cooking for ginger tea.

The Benefits of Citrus Ginger Tea

Citrus fruits, such as oranges, lemons, and grapefruits, are packed with vitamins and antioxidants that can help strengthen your immune system and improve digestion. Ginger, on the other hand, is known for its anti-inflammatory properties and ability to soothe an upset stomach. Combining these two powerhouse ingredients creates a tea that not only tastes great but also provides numerous health benefits.

Boosts Immunity

Citrus ginger tea is rich in vitamin C, which is crucial for a healthy immune system. By incorporating this tea into your daily routine, you can strengthen your body’s defenses against colds, flu, and other illnesses.

Aids Digestion

Ginger has long been used as a natural remedy for digestive issues. It can help alleviate symptoms of indigestion, bloating, and nausea. When combined with the digestive enzymes found in citrus fruits, ginger becomes even more effective at soothing the stomach and promoting healthy digestion.

Energizes and Refreshes

Feeling tired and sluggish? Citrus ginger tea can provide a natural energy boost without the crash that comes from caffeine or sugary drinks. The combination of citrus fruits and ginger wakes up your taste buds and invigorates your body, leaving you feeling revitalized and ready to take on the day.
